The Islamabad District Court serves as a cornerstone of the judicial system in Pakistan’s federal capital, addressing a wide range of civil and criminal cases. Operating under the supervision of the Islamabad High Court, the district judiciary ensures the fair administration of justice in Islamabad. The court currently functions from facilities in Sector F-11, while dedicated judicial complexes are being planned to meet the evolving needs of the capital city.

Historical Background

Before the establishment of the Islamabad High Court, the district judiciary of Islamabad was under the administrative control of the Lahore High Court. From 1980 to 2011, this arrangement governed judicial affairs in Islamabad.

However, significant changes were introduced following the 18th Amendment to the Constitution of Pakistan in 2010. The amendment facilitated the establishment of the Islamabad High Court, which officially took over the supervision of the Islamabad District Court. This transition allowed for a more localized focus on judicial matters specific to Islamabad, enhancing efficiency and accessibility.

Judicial Division: East and West

In 2012, the Islamabad District Court underwent a structural reorganization to better serve the population. The court was divided into two judicial districts—Islamabad East and Islamabad West—each covering distinct areas of the federal capital.

Islamabad West

The jurisdiction of Islamabad West encompasses:

• All sectors within the federal capital.
• Key union councils, including Shah Allah Ditta, Saidpur, and Noorpur Shahan.

Islamabad East

The jurisdiction of Islamabad East covers:

• Eleven union councils: Rawat, Sihala, Koral, Tarlai, Bharakahu, Kirpa, Chirah, Sohan, Kurri, Tumair, and Phulgran.
• Notable villages such as Ojri and Malpur.

This division was designed to streamline judicial processes and provide more focused services to the residents of these areas.

Current Operations and Future Developments

At present, the Islamabad District Court operates from temporary facilities in Sector F-11. Recognizing the increasing demand for judicial services and the need for modern infrastructure, plans are underway to construct purpose-built judicial complexes. These facilities aim to provide state-of-the-art amenities for litigants, legal practitioners, and court personnel, ensuring a more efficient and accessible judicial process.

Role of the Islamabad High Court

As the supervisory authority, the Islamabad High Court hears appeals against decisions made by the Islamabad District Court. This hierarchical structure ensures checks and balances within the judiciary, allowing for fair appellate processes and the resolution of complex legal issues.

The Islamabad District Court plays a vital role in delivering justice to the residents of the federal capital.
